The SmartHands project aims to enable the innovative use of digital media through media pedagogical training on the use of smart-device-based digital media, such as VR/AR glasses and wearables, in the health sector and to establish them as standardized in teaching in the future.

The project primarily addresses the target group of training and further education staff, such as lecturers, lecturers, trainers and further educators. The aim is to pilot a teaching concept to promote the professional and methodological skills of learners using teaching scenarios in the domain of manual medicine (MM) and manual therapy (MT) and then extend it to adjacent domains of the healthcare professions. For example, motor-functional and sensorimotor-perceptive therapy (occupational therapy, sports therapy, etc.) are conceivable.

SmartHands solves two problems in particular in vocational education and training in the healthcare professions. The primary problem is the great need for further training of training and further education staff on how digital media can be used not only as a supplement to other media, but also in a targeted manner to promote the development of professional and methodological skills and the critical self-reflection skills of learners. Secondly, there are no validated teaching scenarios for integrating these digital media into existing learning and examination formats that combine teaching via potentials and explanations for technical use.

These problems are addressed in the project with a teaching platform which, as an eLearning web solution, depicts three innovative pilot teaching scenarios and thus trains training and further education staff in the use of digital media in teaching. Phases of self-study with the learning platform and attendance phases using smart devices alternate in the sense of blended learning and still form a simple and fully integrated learning path. The development of professional and methodological competence, which is considered optimal from the perspective of manual medicine, patients, learners and teachers, and the efficient transfer of scenarios as virtual realities are evaluated and researched. The performance of the learners is decisive for the teaching concept to be developed.
